SINGAPORE, 26 April 2023 – FairPrice Group (FPG) today announced that it will remain steadfast in its efforts to moderate the cost of living through savings and discounts worth up to S$2 million for all union members[1] and Link members[2] across its supermarkets and Kopitiam outlets for the month of May.

Vipul Chawla, Group Chief Executive Officer, FPG said that despite cost pressures, FPG remains laser focused on setting the benchmark for prices of daily staples so as to keep fresh and cooked food, and essentials within reach and readily available.

Deals and Discounts at all FairPrice supermarket formats including FairPrice Online

Starting from 27 April, for a period of four weeks, a special weekly promotion will be offered every Thursday to NTUC Union and Link members to enjoy a 50 per cent discount on selected essential items.

True to FPG’s roots of moderating the price of rice when it was first founded in 1973, the first week’s deal, available from 27 April to 1 May will feature a 50 per cent  discount on two of the most popular types of rice sold at FairPrice – Golden Phoenix Thai Hom Mali Rice, 10kg will be sold at $13.45 (50 per cent discount from $26.90) and FairPrice Homebrand Golden Royal Dragon Thai White Fragrance Rice, 5kg will be sold at $5.90 (50 per cent discount from $11.80).

“Even as Singapore’s economy transformed and made its mark on the global stage over the last fifty years, one thing that has remained constant is that rice continues to be a staple and basic necessity for most families here. With inflation making itself felt on household budgets, helping our customers cope with the rising cost of living is a top priority for us. FPG believes that every cent counts and will continue to actively ensure that we strengthen our commitment towards our social mission to moderate the cost of living in Singapore,” Vipul added.

FPG’s special 50 per cent off May Day discounts on essential items like rice, which are typically not offered at such prices, will take place in addition to existing value programmes to help customers stretch their dollar and mitigate the rising cost of living. For example, FairPrice has in place programmes to help consumers shop smarter and save more through its “Greater Value Every Day” initiative[3]. Last year, a series of special discounts of up to 15 per cent were also provided for essentials such as eggs, oil and rice.

Evergreen value programmes for all walks of life that have provided savings of up to S$11.5 million in 2022 will continue into 2023 with the following discounts:

  • Monday and Wednesday – Pioneer Generation (PG) – 3 per cent off
  • Tuesday – Seniors aged 60 years old and above – 2 per cent off
  • Wednesday – Merdeka Generation (MG) and PG – 3 per cent off
  • Thursday – CHAS Blue – 3 per cent off

Ng Chee Meng, Secretary General of NTUC, said that NTUC continues to help to alleviate the financial burden of daily expenses through social enterprises like FairPrice Group. “May Day deals like 50 per cent off rice at FairPrice and 50 cents for kopi and teh at Kopitiam for union members are part of ongoing and concerted efforts to help Singaporeans cope better with the rising cost of living. This is projected to provide savings of more than $2 million for the month of May. Beyond this, I’m heartened that FairPrice has remained steadfast in offering ongoing support for seniors such as the Pioneer Generation and Merdeka Generation and those who are more financially vulnerable among us including CHAS blue cardholders. The PG, MG, seniors and Chas Blue discount schemes have helped this group to realise savings of $11.5m in 2022 alone. Taken together, I believe that these measures are meaningful and go some way in helping the Singaporean worker manage their family’s day-to-day expenses.”

Kopitiam Deals and Discounts

To mark May Day, Kopitiam will be bringing back its popular 50 cent kopi and teh promotions for Union members.

Kopitiam has also expanded its Rice Garden from 19 stalls to 40 stalls with concessionary meals priced as low as $1.50 for Comcare Cardholders while PG/MG/Union are able to enjoy meals for as low as $2.50.

With the pace of digital adoption and last mile payments becoming more efficient and commonplace, more than one million customers have already started using the FPG app. To encourage even greater adoption, Union members who make a transaction for the first time on their FPG app, in-store or at a Kopitiam, from May to July will be given a $2 E-voucher.

Additional discounts and promotions will also be made available on the FPG App as well as via the Trust Bank card.
