Terra SG and FairPrice Foundation collaborate to launch The Carbon Gallery: Asia’s first carbon-focused experiential hub

  • The Carbon Gallery is the first gallery space in Asia dedicated to carbon literacy, education and awareness; open to the public for free
  • It integrates nature into the visitor journey to showcase how carbon is connected to biodiversity, food systems, and daily life
  • The Carbon Gallery was designed to also complement secondary and primary school sustainability learning, empowering the next generation with an understanding of the role that carbon plays in daily life

SINGAPORE, 10 October 2025 –  Sustainability social enterprise Terra SG and FairPrice Foundation (FPF), the philanthropic arm of FairPrice Group (FPG), announced today the official opening of The Carbon Gallery (TCG), Asia’s first carbon-focused experiential hub. The Gallery, located at Vidacity in Pasir Ris, combines storytelling, interactive technology and gamification to engage visitors on how carbon, climate change and their daily lifestyle choices are connected. It is open to the public to visit for free – since its soft launch in 2024, over 20,000 students and individuals have experienced the Gallery.

TCG was initiated and developed by Terra SG, with key support and funding from FPF and FPG to build on the initiative and expand its impact. Support from FPG includes funds collected from the government’s mandated Disposable Carrier Bag Charge1. The investment into The Carbon Gallery is part of FPG’s and FPF’s wider commitment to make sustainability education more accessible for Singaporeans; especially students and children. It aims to bring carbon literacy beyond the boardroom, into the heartlands so that all in Singapore can understand how daily choices ladder up to the bigger picture.

Vipul Chawla, Group CEO, FairPrice Group and Board Member, FairPrice Foundation shared, “Sustainability is part of FairPrice Group’s DNA. As the nation’s largest retailer, we are dedicated to keeping things ‘Easy on the Planet’ for the next generation. The Carbon Gallery represents our commitment to make sustainability education tangible and accessible for Singaporeans, so they have the knowledge they need to make informed, responsible choices.
This will help us build a better future for ourselves, our families and our planet – one day and one decision at a time.”

TCG is housed on the grounds of the now defunct Loyang Primary School, which was the first primary school in Pasir Ris2. A key consideration in the Gallery’s design was preserving the site’s heritage as a hub for education, while revitalising the space with immersive, multi-sensory experiences. These considerations flow through the visitor journey, designed to transform complex or abstract concepts around carbon and sustainability – such as what C02 emissions are and where they come from – into engaging, tangible learning experiences.

Kelvin Wong, Founder, Terra SG, said: “We are honoured to champion The Carbon Gallery and work alongside FairPrice Foundation to bring sustainability education to life. Through the collaboration, made possible by FairPrice Foundation’s strong support, we are transforming the idea of carbon literacy into an easy, tangible, and accessible experience for every Singaporean.”

The Microforest
Visitors to TCG start their gate-to-gallery experience with biodiversity exhibits. The TCG trail begins at The Microforest, which was designed as a compact ecosystem housing miniature examples of an Agroforest and a Mangrove forest. These living environments showcase Pasir Ris’ kampung and coastal heritage in an urban setting, featuring flora and fauna such as Starfruit Trees, Turmeric Plants, and the endangered Red Teruntum, found commonly in backyards during Singapore’s early days.

The Agroforest exhibit demonstrates how nature can be seamlessly blended with agriculture, and highlights the vital role that fruit and medicinal plants played in sustaining communities of the past. The Mangrove Forest exhibit illustrates how mangrove species contribute to carbon storage, flood protection, and maintaining biodiversity.

Respite Gardens
The path then opens up into the Respite Gardens, a space before the main gallery designed for rest and reflection. Shaded by fruiting trees and carpeted by low-growing herbs, spices, and other plants, The Gardens offer visitors a chance to take a breather before stepping into the main gallery.

The kampung-inspired landscape features edible plants such as papaya, sweet potatoes, lemongrass, and pandan, alongside native banana trees that have been growing on the site since it was a primary school. The fauna reflects Terra SG’s and FPF’s intent to blend history, nature, and revitalisation into the Gallery’s design, with sustainability at the forefront.

The Carbon Gallery
The journey then culminates at the main Gallery. Here, visitors move on from lessons in nature to immersive exhibitions that explore carbon’s role in their lives, the environmental impact of their everyday choices, and how they can help create a more sustainable future. Some of its key exhibits include:

  • The Carbon Cart – an interactive mini-supermarket display where visitors are challenged to ‘shop’ virtually for daily essentials within the limit of 60 ‘carbon coins’, encouraging them to consider the carbon cost of everyday products
  • Eating a Little Better – a station with interactive games that spotlight the state of food wastage in Singapore, and teach visitors simple and practical ways that they can reduce food waste at home
  • Choose Your 2050 – immersive ‘portals’ where visitors experience what climate positive and negative futures could look like for the planet, encouraging them to reflect on the future they want to create
  • Power for Change – an interactive web app that engages visitors with short questions throughout the Gallery to help them build their ‘sustainability persona’, providing personalised recommendations on how to live and act more sustainably.

TCG complements the Singapore secondary school geography curriculum and supports primary school sustainability and environmental learning, bridging classroom knowledge on the complex relationship between human and environmental systems with interactive, real-world experiences and examples.

Terra SG and FPF have also collaborated to build educational workshops and programmes around the Gallery experience, curated for schools, corporates, and community groups. These workshops and programmes help FPF ensure that TCG provides an innovative and relevant experience for all audiences.

The launch of TCG follows a series of initiatives by FPF and FPG to keep things easy on the planet across its operations, and within the communities it operates. These include the opening of FPG’s flagship sustainable supermarket at City Square Mall, and the launch of Start Strong, Stay Strong, Singapore’s first pre-school sustainability and nutrition education initiative.
