SINGAPORE, 28 August 2025 –  FairPrice Group (FPG) announced today that it is opening the world’s first gen-AI powered supermarket1 at Punggol Digital District (PDD) on 28 August 2025. The new FairPrice Finest outlet will feature first-of-its-kind customer innovations aimed at making Singaporeans’ favourite pastime of grocery shopping even easier. These include hyperpersonalised shopping recommendations and promotions, hybrid virtual and physical ‘endless aisles’, automated discount application at checkout, and more.

The outlet, located in Singapore’s “silicon valley”, utilises a series of Google Cloud solutions and services that leverage cutting-edge technology to deliver unique, tailored and easy shopping experiences to shoppers. This launch marks the first major milestone of FPG’s SOT Programme, which was announced in June 20252.

Through its SOT programme, FPG has committed to pilot more than 20 new digital solutions a year over the next three years aimed at reinventing the consumer retail journey. FairPrice Finest PDD will serve as FPG’s benchmark for digitally innovative store design, and will act as a testbed for retail technology pilots that could be implemented across its network of more than 570 touchpoints, that have more than one million customer engagements a day.

Vipul Chawla, Group CEO, FairPrice Group, said that realising FPG’s Store of Tomorrow vision is ultimately about much more than implementing novel solutions to ‘wow’ customers – it is about harnessing the power of digital innovations like gen AI to deliver on FPG’s purpose of making every day a little better for those it serves, by being easy on the wallet, experience, and planet.

“Over the last couple of years, technology has been a critical enabler for FPG to not just adapt to, but stay ahead of fast-changing consumer needs and expectations. Our Store of Tomorrow programme, enabled by Google Cloud AI, was introduced to keep this momentum going by infusing innovation deeper throughout our business. FairPrice Finest PDD is the first major step on a multi-year journey to make things even easier on the experience and wallet for our customers, by reimagining what retail means for all in Singapore.”

The SOT programme is anchored on FPG’s strategic collaboration with Google Cloud and other technology partners to reimagine the future of retail. It is powered by a unique combination of Google Cloud’s open platforms, such as Vertex AI; Google-quality enterprise search; and Google’s leading Gemini, Chirp, Imagen, and Veo models.

Thomas Kurian, CEO, Google Cloud, said: “Our expanded partnership with FPG and the opening of its ‘Store of Tomorrow’ is a defining moment for agentic AI deployment in retail. It reinforces FPG’s commitment to applying enterprise AI at scale to elevate customer experiences and foster a culture of innovation powered by people. We see FPG’s AI transformation—extending from the storefront to the back office—as a blueprint for the entire retail industry.”

Reinventing the Retail Journey

FairPrice Finest PDD’s gen AI-powered features were designed to provide customers with unique and intuitive ways to shop, on top of alleviating key friction points throughout the consumer journey that take up their time and energy. These features include:

  • Smart Cart technology and gen-AI shopping assistants to help customers navigate aisles and provide them with personalised promotions and recommendations based on their shopping history and shopping cart
  • Digital price cards to offer shoppers clear real-time pricing and promotional information, while reducing FPG’s carbon footprint by removing the need for printed pricecards
  • Digital ‘endless’ aisles, accessible by scanning QR codes throughout the store with the FPG App, to provide shoppers with a greatly extended range of product options for purchase and delivery, blending physical and online retail seamlessly
  • Automated discount application at checkout for eligible customers such as seniors, the Pioneer and Merdeka generation, and CHAS Blue and Orange cardholders

Empowering Staff, Transforming Ways of Work

One of the main tenets of FPG’s SOT programme is empowering its frontline workers – the cornerstone of the business – to exceed customer expectations, and grow alongside the organisation. Through FairPrice Finest PDD, FPG will also pilot innovative gen-AI solutions aimed at improving staff experiences, and simplifying ways of work. These solutions include:

  • Advanced CCTV video analytics (Vision AI) that provide staff with real-time updates on when and where human intervention is required to improve the in-store experience for customers, such as if a shelf needs restocking or a spill needs to be cleaned
  • Grocer Genie, a smartphone app-based virtual assistant, that facilitates the assignment of store tasks to frontline workers, provides them with access to an FPG-specific gen-AI chatbot for work-related queries, and provides store management with regular updates and data-driven insights on how in-store operations can be improved

Reimagining the Future of Retail for All in Singapore

These features and more are being trialed at FairPrice Finest PDD as part of FPG’s prototype, pilot, scale approach to digital innovation. They will be rigorously evaluated based on how much they enhance customer value and experience and improve operational efficiency before potentially being rolled out across FPG’s businesses and touchpoints, from FairPrice supermarkets to Kopitiam food courts, Cheers convenience stores, and Unity pharmacies.
