- FairPrice Group is the only retailer in Singapore with an established food rescue programme that reaches more than 25,000 beneficiaries a year
- Through Neighbourhood Food Share, FPG distributes over two tonnes of rescued fruits and vegetables a month to vulnerable communities across Singapore
- Strategic partner Peoples’ Association will support FPG’s expansion of the programme to 60 distribution points by end-2025, ensuring that fresh produce goes to communities who need it most
SINGAPORE, 23 July 2025 – To ensure that more vulnerable communities in Singapore have access to nutritious staples, FairPrice Group (FPG) announced today that its Neighbourhood Food Share initiative (NFS), supported by FairPrice Foundation (FPF), will be expanded to over 60 distribution points by the end of 2025. FPG is the only grocery retailer in Singapore that runs a food rescue initiative, providing fresh fruits and vegetables to more than 25,000 beneficiaries a year through NFS.
This expansion comes as FairPrice Group celebrates its 52nd anniversary, tracing its roots back to 22 July 1973, with the opening of the first NTUC Welcome supermarket in Toa Payoh Lorong 4 Block 192, which remains in operation today. This enduring legacy of serving the community underpins FPG’s continued commitment to initiatives like Neighbourhood Food Share.
NFS was first launched in September 2023 with just 15 distribution points, and has grown steadily to 51 across the island thanks to the support of key partners such as the Peoples’ Association (PA). Through these 51 distribution points, more than two tonnes of fruits and vegetables rescued from FPG’s supermarket outlets and distribution centres are given out to individuals and families in need every month. Since the programme’s launch, close to 30 tonnes of fresh produce have been distributed.
Vipul Chawla, Group CEO, FairPrice Group shared, “So many that we serve through FPG’s community engagement programmes show a strong determination to provide their families with healthy, nutritious food, but face challenges in doing so because of the current stubborn inflationary environment. The Neighbourhood Food Share initiative reflects our commitment as Singapore’s largest retailer to make every day a little better for those we serve by empowering the underprivileged in our community to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.”
FPG’s community partners for the programme play a critical role in ensuring that its rescued fresh fruits and vegetables reach members of the community who need them most. The PA has been a key strategic partner for the programme since August 2024.
Jeanie Tan, Assistant Chief Executive (Operations), Peoples’ Association said, “This partnership with FairPrice Group exemplifies how ground-up initiatives can create lasting positive change in our community. Every week, dedicated volunteers from Residents’ Networks across the island come together to sort and pack rescued produce, ensuring it reaches vulnerable residents who need it most. Beyond food distribution, we are seeing genuine friendships forming between volunteers and beneficiaries. These organic connections have created good support networks within our neighbourhoods. The enthusiasm of residents stepping forward to volunteer demonstrates the strong spirit of caring and sharing that defines our community.”
The expansion of NFS follows a series of initiatives by FPG and FPF to improve access to and understanding of nutrition for underprivileged communities in Singapore. These include:
- The Protein Pledge, a commitment by FPF to provide S$1 million of fresh protein to needy communities by 2025;
- the launch of A Full Plate, Singapore’s largest food donation drive to provide individuals and families in need with fresh groceries and hot meals;
- and Start Strong, Stay Strong, Singapore’s first preschool nutrition and sustainability education initiative.
