FairPrice Group to prioritise bridging the nutrition gap for seniors in Singapore; to partner with Tan Tock Seng Hospital in developing nutritional solutions

  • FPG’s philanthropic arm FPF conducted a study which found six in 10 seniors do not know what goes into a healthy plate
  • The MoU will see FPG and TTSH jointly develop a practical, gamified nutrition education curriculum for seniors that will be rolled out across Singapore by end-2026
  • As part of MoU, FPG’s Own Brands business and TTSH to explore the joint development of nutritional solutions to help seniors combat malnutrition

SINGAPORE, 5 November 2025 –  FairPrice Group’s (FPG) philanthropic arm FairPrice Foundation (FPF) and Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today to bridge the nutrition gap for seniors in Singapore. Through the MoU, FPF and TTSH will leverage their collective expertise and network to bring nutrition education and access to the heartlands. The aim of the partnership is to ensure seniors across the island have the support they need to stay strong and thrive in their golden years, aligning FPG’s efforts with the national push for senior health and independence.

Under the MoU, FPF and TTSH will develop the Stay Strong programme – a gamified nutrition education curriculum for seniors that FPF aims to roll out across the country by end-2026. FPG’s Own Brands and Food Solutions business, the nation’s largest Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) business, is also exploring the joint development of nutritional solutions with TTSH to help seniors combat dietary deficiencies in Singapore.

These potential initiatives were informed by the Stay Strong study, a survey conducted by FPF in the third quarter of 2025 to gain a better understanding of the challenges that seniors face with accessing nutrition in daily life.

The study comprised a survey of over 500 seniors and interviews with seniors and their caregivers, and revealed a gap in nutrition knowledge and access:

  • While 86 per cent of seniors believe they need to eat more nutritiously as they age, more than half could not correctly identify what goes into a healthy plate.
  • Taste is the number one priority for seniors when it comes to mealtimes, with nutrition and cost tied as the fourth priority.
  • While 67 per cent of seniors agree that they need more protein than younger adults, data from the Health Promotion Board indicates that 1 in 2 seniors are still not meeting their recommended protein intake. This suggests that seniors may still not be consuming enough protein to prevent muscle loss, frailty and other related issues, despite understanding how important it is.
  • Six in 10 seniors rarely seek out new information on nutrition.
  • Seven in 10 seniors cite family traditions and eating habits as key motivators in influencing their decision to eat nutritiously.

As part of the survey, TTSH Geriatric Medicine doctors and dietitians were invited to contribute and address common senior nutrition myths, focusing on correcting misconceptions such as the idea that nutritious food is unappetising, and confusion over what constitutes a healthy meal.1

Vipul Chawla, Group CEO, FairPrice Group and Board Member, FairPrice Foundation, shared: “The seniors we serve through the FairPrice Group and the FairPrice Foundation show a strong determination to age independently. As the nation’s largest retailer, we understand the needs of Singapore’s growing senior population and want to do our part in supporting them with achieving this ambition, through proper nutrition. This is the foundation of the Stay Strong programme and FairPrice Group – making every day a little better for Singapore’s silver population by bringing nutrition access and education to those who need it most.”

Adjunct Professor Tang Kong Choong, Chief Executive Officer of Tan Tock Seng Hospital, NHG Health, said, “To serve our rapidly ageing society, we place strong emphasis on geriatric care, from tackling frailty to supporting the complex health conditions of our seniors. In the hospital, we can see first-hand how nutrition can make all the difference in helping our patients, especially for the seniors to recover faster and be more independent. This partnership with FairPrice Foundation will allow us to take our expertise in geriatrics and dietetics beyond the hospital and share it where it matters most – right in the heartlands where the seniors are. By working together, we can give our seniors practical knowledge and better access to healthier food options they need to stay healthy, active and well.”

This partnership with TTSH marks the expansion of FPF’s multi-year nutrition education commitment for Singaporeans. The ‘Stay Strong’ programme is the senior-focused pillar of FPF’s broader ‘Start Strong, Stay Strong’ vision, which also features Singapore’s first preschool nutrition education programme, to  empower children with a foundational understanding of food and nutrition leading to healthier habits  for themselves, their families, and the environment.

The Stay Strong study and MoU with TTSH are the latest in a series of initiatives launched by FPG and FPF in recent months to engage Singaporeans in the heartlands and support residents with building stronger, more resilient communities. These include:

  • The expansion of the Neighbourhood Food Share initiative to 60 distribution points by the end of 2025, providing communities in need with fresh fruits and vegetables for free
  • The Cheers Breakfast Club, providing more than 12,000 Primary 6 students with nutritious breakfast bundles to start their examinations strong
  • The doubling of discounts for CHAS Blue and Orange cardholders with large families from September to December 2025
  • The launch of The Carbon Gallery, Asia’s first carbon-focused educational and experiential gallery aimed at empowering heartland residents with the knowledge they need to make better choices for the planet
  • The launch of A Full Plate, Singapore’s largest food donation drive to provide fresh groceries and hot meals to nearly 700,000 beneficiaries of 21 charity partners
