SINGAPORE, 17 June 2019 – NTUC FairPrice (FairPrice) announced today that both Merdeka Generation (MG) and Pioneer Generation (PG) members will be able to enjoy a three per cent discount at more than 140 FairPrice outlets island-wide every Wednesday from 1 July 2019 onwards for a year; PG members will continue to enjoy an additional day of discount every Monday.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO, NTUC FairPrice, said: “This additional benefit to MG members is a simple gesture by FairPrice in appreciation to our seniors for their contribution in developing Singapore as a vibrant nation with a cohesive community.”

Mr Seah added, “We have also extended the PG Discount scheme for another year and consolidated the benefits so that both discounts may be enjoyed on Wednesdays and makes it easier for our customers to remember. Beyond helping seniors to save more on daily essentials, these efforts also aim to encourage the community as a whole to honour and show their appreciation for our seniors.”

With the inclusion of the MG Discount Scheme, FairPrice now offers three different initiatives to help different groups of seniors stretch their dollar further through different days of the week. These include:

Day of the weekInitiativeBenefit
MondayPG Discount Scheme3% discount
TuesdaySeniors Discount Scheme2% discount
WednesdayPG & MG Discount Scheme3% discount

In 2018, PG members who shopped at FairPrice saved over $4.45 million through the PG Scheme while seniors saved over $2.45 million through the Senior Discount Scheme over the same period. The year-long extension of the PG Discount Scheme, along with the inclusion of the MG Discount Scheme and Seniors Discount Scheme is estimated to cost FairPrice more than $9.8 million over the next 12 months.

To enjoy the MG or PG discount, shoppers need to present their MG or PG card, provided by the government, at cashier counters at all FairPrice supermarkets, FairPrice Shop stores, FairPrice Finest outlets, and FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets. At self-checkout counters, shoppers need to select the MG or PG discount option. The discount is subject to a $200 cap per transaction per day.

EZ-Link payments accepted at FairPrice stores

To provide greater convenience, seniors can also pay for their purchases with EZ-link contactless stored value cards, which include the PAssion Silver Card and PAssion Silver Concession Card from 1 July 2019 onwards.

Mr Seah added, “With our stores now accepting EZ-Link stored value cards, grocery shopping is now more convenient and efficient for our senior customers as they can simply use the same card used for public transport.”

All Senior citizens aged 60 and above receive PAssion Card benefits. MG members will also receive a $100 top up for their PAssion Silver Card from the Singapore Government.
