Pioneers enjoy 3% discounts on Mondays in addition to Priority Queue every day

SINGAPORE, 10 November 2014 – NTUC FairPrice (FairPrice), today, updated on the take up of its 3 percent Pioneers discount initiative that was launched on 13 October. Over the past four weeks, the initiative has saved members of the Pioneers Generation a weekly average of about $50,000 on their purchases at all FairPrice supermarkets, FairPrice Finest stores and FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets on Mondays. This discount is given on top of the FairPrice’s existing 2 percent discount programme on Tuesdays for Seniors aged 60 and above.

Prior to the introduction of the Pioneers discount, FairPrice saw a weekly average savings of $58,000 by Senior Citizens on their groceries for its 2 percent Seniors discount on Tuesdays. Since the launch of “Pioneers OK”, the total amount of savings enjoyed by the seniors under the two programmes almost doubled to over $100,000.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO of NTUC FairPrice, said, “In line with the government’s initiatives to recognise the Pioneer Generation’s contribution, FairPrice also wanted to thank this group of individuals for shaping and contributing to Singapore. This initiative enables this segment of the society, many of whom are retirees, to enjoy additional cost savings when they purchase their essentials. In fact, with the addition of the 3 percent discount on Mondays, the members of our Pioneer Generation are able to enjoy savings on two days of the week, allowing them more options to stretch their dollar. We expect more Pioneers to participate in this initiative with greater awareness of the programme.”

Mr Seah added, “In addition to the 3 percent Pioneers discount on Mondays, FairPrice also set up priority queues for the Pioneer generation in stores, whereby other customers are encouraged to give way to Pioneer generation customers in these queues when making payment.”

Mr Michael Ng, 69, a member of the Pioneer Generation, who shops regularly at NTUC FairPrice, shared, “The 3 percent discount is appreciated by many of my friends as every little bit counts especially for those in their retirement years with little or no source of income. I feel that Pioneers in general are not looking for a hand-out, and that’s where it’s the small but significant gestures that matter – like priority queues. It is nice to be served first and I like this VIP treatment. I am glad that FairPrice has taken the time and effort to look at such relevant ways to benefit Pioneers.”

The additional discount was introduced as part of NTUC Enterprise’s “Pioneers OK” programme to honour the Pioneer generation through the various NTUC social enterprises. The Pioneer generation include seniors who are aged 65 and above in 2014, and obtained Singapore citizenship on or before 31 Dec 1986. These Pioneers will qualify for a 3 percent discount every Monday (subject to a $200 cap; excluding statutory items such as gift vouchers, newspapers, cigarettes), till 31 December 2015.

To enjoy the discount and priority queue, customers within the Pioneer generation group are to flash their Pioneer Generation card, provided as part of the Pioneer Generation Package from the government, at the point-of-purchase at all FairPrice outlets.
