SINGAPORE, 25 August 2014 – The “Breadwinners – We Care, U Care” campaign, jointly organised by NTUC FairPrice and NTUC Care and Share, returns for a two-week period today. This year, FairPrice Foundation will donate $5 for each loaf of FairPrice housebrand bread sold at all FairPrice stores including Cheers and FairPrice Xpress. NTUC FairPrice Foundation targets to donate up to $1.6 million, the largest amount for the campaign thus far, to the NTUC-U Care Fund to help low-income families and show their support for breadwinners this year.

The campaign launch event, held in conjunction with the official opening of FairPrice Xtra @ Sports Hub, was graced by Minister for Manpower, Mr Tan Chuan-Jin and hosted by Mr Bobby Chin, Chairman of NTUC FairPrice. Mr Chin said, “As one of the largest retail employers in Singapore, we recognise and understand the contributions and sacrifices made by breadwinners, who are the primary source of financial support in a family. Being a breadwinner is a challenging role and we started this campaign four year ago to do our part to reach out to the community and help under-privileged breadwinners put food on the table for their families. Through this simple initiative, we hope to raise awareness among our customers to care and share. This simple act will mean a lot to the breadwinners of low-income families and help to lessen the financial burdens of low-income union members and their families.”

FairPrice Foundation has donated a total of $17.5 million to the NTUC-U Care Fund since it was set up in 2009.

FairPrice Xtra @ Sports Hub is the first sports-themed hypermarket and the seventh hypermarket launched by FairPrice since it introduced its first FairPrice Xtra store in 2006. The store spans almost 5,300 sqm and offers a good selection of sporting equipment, accessories and sportswear besides the usual household consumables, fresh produce, groceries, electronics and casual wear.

Commenting on the latest FairPrice Xtra hypermarket, Mr Chin said, “We aim to bring more convenience to our customers in this area and also provide them with a fun and vibrant location to shop with their families through our latest FairPrice Xtra hypermarket at Sports Hub. Beyond the specially designed sports theme of this hypermarket, we hope to play our part in promoting sports in Singapore and encourage active living.”

FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets offer one-stop shopping for the entire family and includes various family-friendly features. These include trolleys fitted with baby seats, lanes dedicated to providing an extensive variety of baby products, wider aisles to accommodate wheelchairs and walking aids, rest areas for the elderly, special family-sized promotional deals, and other services including free delivery for electronic products. FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets have been recognised for their family-friendly features and remain the only hypermarket chain accredited with the Business for Families Mark certification.

The two-week Breadwinners campaign will take place from 25 August to 7 September. Customers can purchase any FairPrice housebrand bread at all FairPrice stores, including FairPrice Finest, FairPrice Xtra, Cheers and FairPrice Xpress to support the campaign.
