On 28 March 2009, from 8pm to 10pm, NTUC FairPrice will be switching off all non-essential lighting at FairPrice Xtra, FairPrice Finest and FairPrice supermarkets as well as its corporate office and warehousing facilities, to support Earth Hour. Though storefront signage will be unlit, customers need not worry as it is business as usual at FairPrice stores.

For Earth Hour, individuals and corporations around the world have been encouraged to join this worldwide effort in calling for action to save our planet for future generations. Singapore will join international cities such as Beijing, Cape Town, Copenhagen, Edinburgh, Helsinki, Moscow and New York in this large-scale project that saw more than 50 million people in 370 cities around the world take part last year.

Mr Gerry Lee, Deputy Managing Director (Group Business) and Green Committee Chairman, NTUC FairPrice said, “By simply turning off all non-essential lighting for at least one hour at our offices, warehouses and stores, we will join tens of millions of concerned citizens and corporations throughout the world in taking proactive steps towards saving our planet. We are also encouraging all staff to participate in Earth Hour by turning off lights at their home. FairPrice has long been a supporter of green initiatives and as a cooperative, it is our mission to ensure that we serve the community and the environment we operate in.”

Due to safety and security concerns, not all lights will be switched off at the various locations. However, participating FairPrice stores will be leaving their lights off for longer than the stipulated one hour, from 8.30 pm to 10pm.

FairPrice’s commitment to environmentally-friendly practices extends to giving a daily 10-cent rebate to FairPrice shoppers who bring their own shopping bag, to reduce plastic bag usage. It is a key participant of the Bring Your Own Bag Day initiative, in which shoppers are encouraged to bring their own shopping bag every Wednesday.
