Thanks to strong customer support, the FairPrice Cares! Campaign came to a successful close with over 143,000 plastic bags saved in a single week. This exceeded the campaign’s target of saving 100,000 plastic bags in a week by over 40 per cent.

The FairPrice Cares! Campaign ran from 22 April till 28 April 2012 in recognition of Earth Day and was the third year the co-operative had organised this campaign. Protecting the environment is one of FairPrice’s main CSR pillars and encouraging customers to save and reduce plastic bag usage is an ongoing initiative.

In 2007, FairPrice introduced the “FairPrice Green Rewards” initiative where customers who bring their own bags are rewarded with a 10-cent rebate for a minimum purchase of $10 when they shop for their groceries any day of the week. The continued support from customers has resulted in an annual saving of 5 to 6 million plastic bags over the past two years.

FairPrice also donated $30,000 to Bizlink Centre and Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled to assist them in their community work. The co-operative had earlier committed to do so if it was able to exceed the target number of plastic bags to save for the campaign.
