FAIRPRICE LAUNCHES BIG HEART CHALLENGE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR FIVE CHARITIES

Singapore’s largest supermarket chain, NTUC FairPrice (“FairPrice”), launched the inaugural FairPrice Big Heart Challenge, with the aim of raising at least $300,000 for five charities under the Community Chest.

The home-grown retailer has called on Singaporeans to take up this nation-wide challenge to raise funds for the needy. From now till 18 March, they can pick up FairPrice Big Heart origami paper from 15 FairPrice stores to fold them into hearts.

For every paper heart collected, FairPrice has pledged to donate 30 cents in aid of Asian Women’s Welfare Association, Fei Yue Family Service Centre, HCA Hospice Care, SUN-DAC Centre for the Disabled and Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS).

To kick off this charity initiative, FairPrice will be holding a heart-folding drive in FairPrice Xtra hypermarket at Basement 2 of AMK Hub, 53 Ang Mo Kio Ave 3, on 9 March 2007, from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon. FairPrice staff volunteers, and beneficiaries and volunteers from the five charity organisations will be demonstrating the folding of these origami hearts. Mr Lim Swee Say, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, and NTUC Secretary-General, Mr Ng Ser Miang, Chairman of NTUC FairPrice, and Mr Tan Kian Chew, Group Chief Executive Officer of NTUC FairPrice, will be gracing the occasion and joining in the heart folding drive.

FairPrice’s latest initiative to benefit the underprivileged is organised in conjunction with the Shin Min Record Setting Carnival. The FairPrice Big Heart Challenge will culminate in the Carnival, which promises to be a fun-filled event held at Suntec City on 24-25 March, from 10am to 9pm. The public can bring their folded hearts to this event, or drop them off at FairPrice stores, to be collected and counted.

Indeed, FairPrice’s social efforts have been pulsing steady and strong. Last month, FairPrice announced its commitment to absorb the 1 July 2007 GST increase on 400 essential items, to help cushion the impact of the tax increase for workers and Singaporeans. It had also promised to give out one million dollars worth of food vouchers to help the poor and needy.
