SINGAPORE, 25 April 2014 – The “Recycling Helps @ South East” campaign was jointly launched by NTUC FairPrice Foundation and South East Community Development Council (CDC) which aimed to raise funds for students from less-privileged families while promoting recycling. For every 5kg of recyclables collected by students, FairPrice Foundation will donate a set of $25 in FairPrice vouchers to a student from a less-privileged family studying in schools within the South East District.
Through the efforts of 13 participating schools, over 2,000kg of used plastic bottles, paper and cans were collected for this meaningful cause. As a result, a total of $10,000 worth of NTUC FairPrice vouchers was successfully raised, benefiting 400 students from less-privileged families. “Recycling Helps @ South East” is a 5E[1] initiative under Go Green @ South East, the South East CDC’s Greenplan towards environmental awareness and sustainability in the District.
At the close of the campaign, representatives from participating schools and 30 beneficiaries from First Toa Payoh Primary and MacPherson Primary gathered at Bedok Library today for a budgeting workshop. This was followed by a presentation of the cheque by Mr Jonas Kor, Assistant General Manager for FairPrice Foundation to Dr Maliki Osman, Mayor of South East District. Mayor Maliki also personally presented FairPrice vouchers and certificates of appreciation to school representatives and student beneficiaries.
Mr Jonas Kor, Assistant General Manager, FairPrice Foundation, said, “FairPrice has continued to partner South East CDC for the second year in this meaningful and important recycling initiative. Through the storyboard competition and collection of recyclables, the message on the importance of embracing sustainable practices through the various green initiatives is further reinforced to the students in a fun and informal channel. The students have worked hard to collect recyclables with the aim of raising funds for less-privileged students. As a result of their efforts, FairPrice Foundation is glad to be donating $10,000 in FairPrice vouchers to needy students in the South East District.”
Dr Maliki Osman, Mayor of South East District, said, “Recycling Helps @ South East is part of our efforts to champion environmental responsibility as well as promote active citizenry in our community. We are heartened that more schools have taken part in this programme, enabling us to instil the values of protecting our environment early in the hearts and minds of our younger generation. We are thankful to FairPrice Foundation in partnering us to make this campaign a success.”
The storyboard competition titled “My Recycling Story @ South East” launched in conjunction with Recycling Helps @ South East 2013 also concluded in the cheque presentation event in Bedok Library. Winners of the competition received their prizes, sponsored by FairPrice, comprising FairPrice vouchers worth a total of $700 from Mayor Maliki.
