  • Merdeka Generation (MG) members who have yet to receive their MG cards will now be able to start enjoying the MG discounts at all FairPrice stores and at Foodfare and Kopitiam food courts and coffee shops on Wednesdays with relevant documentation such as National Registration Identification Card (NRIC), PAssion Silver Concession Card or letter of MG eligibility

SINGAPORE, 8 July 2019 – NTUC FairPrice (FairPrice), NTUC Foodfare and Kopitiam jointly announced today, following public feedback on the Merdeka Generation (MG) discount scheme, that it will allow MG members who have yet to receive their MG cards to also enjoy the MG discounts.

Previously, the MG discounts were granted only to customers who presented their MG cards; National Registration Identification Card (NRIC) was not accepted as a form of verification since age is not the only criteria for MG eligibility.

With immediate effect, MG members can simply present their NRIC, PAssion Silver Concession Card or letter of MG eligibility for verification. This practice will be in place until 31 July 2019 when all MG members would have received their MG card.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, Deputy CEO, Business Synergies, NTUC Enterprise and CEO, NTUC FairPrice, said, “While the MG Discount Scheme will run for a year, we appreciate that MG members wish to enjoy the discounts from FairPrice, Foodfare and Kopitiam immediately. However, we understand that there are still MG members who have yet to receive their MG cards. We have thus decided to be flexible and make exceptions to extend the benefit to them through verification via relevant documentations like NRIC or their MG letter.”

Since the launch of the initiative on 3 July 2019, FairPrice has received feedback from about 100 shoppers through its customer hotline, email and social media platforms requesting that the supermarket chain allow MG members who have yet to receive their MG cards, to use their NRIC to qualify for the MG discount.

To be consistent, eligibility for MG discounts at NTUC Foodfare and Kopitiam will also be aligned and practised at over 90 Foodfare and Kopitiam food courts and coffee shops islandwide (Please see appendix for details).

The FairPrice MG Discount Scheme complements the existing Pioneer Generation Discount Scheme and Seniors’ Discount Scheme, which are meant to show appreciation to seniors and help them save on daily essentials. All three schemes are estimated to cost FairPrice more than S$9.8 million over the next 12 months (Please see appendix for details on the three Discount Schemes).
