FairPrice to donate $10,000 to WWF after achieving target number of pledges

NTUC FairPrice will be donating $10,000 donation to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), in keeping to its promise to donate a dollar for every online pledge made by customers and staff for Earth Hour.

Since last Saturday, visitors to FairPrice’s website at www.fairprice.com.sg and its Facebook page at www.facebook.com/thatsmyfairprice have been able to make an online pledge to switch off their lights during Earth Hour, which takes place at 8.30pm tomorrow.

FairPrice’s target of 10,000 online pledges was reached in less than a week, attesting to the large groundswell of support for the environment among FairPrice’s customers and staff.

Mr Gerry Lee, Deputy Managing Director (Group Business) and Green Committee Chairman of NTUC FairPrice, said, “We are heartened that our customers and staff have responded enthusiastically to our call to pledge their support for Earth Hour, helping us to meet our target of 10,000 online pledges in less than a week. FairPrice thanks them for supporting this cause, and joining us in our effort to save our planet.”

FairPrice will be switching off all non-essential lighting tomorrow, such as signage light boxes and façade lighting, at all 90 over supermarkets as well as its warehousing facilities. The lights-off would last beyond the stipulated one hour for Earth Hour participants, with all stores doing so from 8.30pm to closing time. FairPrice stores that open 24 hours will do so from 8.30pm to 7.30am on Sunday.

Not all lights can be switched off due to safety and security considerations. It will be business as usual at all FairPrice stores during this time.

Other Green Initiatives

The ongoing FairPrice Green Rebates Scheme to encourage shoppers to bring their own shopping bags has to date saved more than 43 million plastic bags, and given out more than $500,000 in rebates, since it was launched in 2007. Customers at FairPrice supermarkets enjoy a 10 cents rebate for bringing their own bag.

Last December, FairPrice also launched Singapore’s first eco-friendly supermarket at City Square Mall, which features the use of recycled store fixtures, energy-saving equipment and lighting, as well as recycling machines.
