NTUC FairPrice Foundation received overwhelming support from the community for the “Lend a hand, Give a heart” project that was launched on 24 April 2009. Through this project, FairPrice Foundation will donate another $3.182 million to the Labour Movement U Care fund, making its total donation to the U Care fund to $5.25 million. The U Care fund was launched in March this year to help lower-wage workers, including those retrenched, to ride out the recession.

The big hearts placed at three FairPrice stores were completely filled with signatures from the public showing their support for this project. The remaining pledges were received online via the FairPrice Foundation website.

Mr Ng Ser Miang, Chairman of NTUC FairPrice and NTUC FairPrice Foundation said, “We would like to thank our customers and the community for their support in the Lend a Hand, Give a Heart project. We are heartened to see so many of our customers and the community lending their hand and caring for those in need. FairPrice is glad to be able to do our part for the Labour Movement and help lower workers and those who are retrenched during this downturn.”

NTUC Care and Share Director Mr Zainudin Nordin said, “The NTUC social enterprises had collectively set themselves a target of $10 million for the U Care fund this year. With the latest contribution of over $3 million by NTUC FairPrice Foundation, our social enterprises have achieved their fundraising goal of $10 million today. To date, this also brings the U Care fund total to over $13 million. With the last few laps to go, I urge the Labour Movement family and partners to continue pressing on with their efforts to raise as much as they can for our workers.”
