Since its launch in October 2014, the discount has saved pioneers a total of $3.6 million

SINGAPORE, 21 December 2015 – NTUC FairPrice (FairPrice) today announced that its three per cent Pioneer Generation Discount on Mondays will be extended for another year, till 31 December 2016. The initiative was originally scheduled to conclude at the end of this year.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO of NTUC FairPrice, said, “FairPrice looks to continue serving the needs of Singaporeans from all walks of life. With the extension of the Pioneer Generation discount scheme, we hope to continue to provide greater savings for pioneers to purchase their daily essentials and stretch their dollar. This is our small way of thanking and honouring our pioneers who have given so much of themselves for Singapore.”

Over the past 14 months since the initiative was launched in October 2014, the Pioneer Generation Discount has helped members of the Pioneer Generation save a total of S$3.6 million on their purchases at all FairPrice supermarkets, FairPrice Finest stores and FairPrice Xtra hypermarkets on Monday. With the initiative, members of the Pioneer Generation enjoy an additional three per cent discount on top of existing schemes that help shoppers stretch their dollar. This initiative complements the existing Seniors’ Discount Scheme, which was introduced in 2002, where seniors aged 60 and above enjoy a two per cent discount when they shop on Tuesdays. Over the same 14 month period, the Seniors Discount Scheme gave out over $2.8 million.

In addition to the discount, FairPrice also designated priority payment queues for the Pioneer generation at all FairPrice supermarkets and hypermarkets islandwide, where customers are encouraged to give way to Pioneer Generation customers in these queues when making payment. The queues continue to serve as a reminder to customers and to the community to show kindness and respect by giving way to Pioneers.

The discount was initially introduced as part of NTUC Enterprise’s “Pioneers OK” programme to honour the Pioneer generation through the various NTUC social enterprises. The Pioneer Generation include seniors who are aged 65 and above in 2014, and who obtained Singapore citizenship on or before 31 December 1986.

To enjoy the discount on Mondays (subject to a S$200 cap per transaction; excluding statutory items such as gift vouchers, newspapers and cigarettes) and priority queueing, Pioneer generation members need only to flash their Pioneer Generation card, provided as part of the Pioneer Generation Package from the government, at the cashier counters at all FairPrice outlets.
