Second hypermarket will be opened by third quarter 2007 in Hougang
Singapore’s largest supermarket chain, NTUC FairPrice (“FairPrice”), today celebrated the official opening of FairPrice Xtra – its first hypermarket, in AMK Hub. FairPrice also announced that it will open its second hypermarket in the third quarter of this year, after converting its current supermarket in Hougang Point.
FairPrice Xtra AMK Hub marks FairPrice’s foray into the hypermarket sector. The store spans an area of 77,000 square feet and has a wider range of goods compared to the chain of supermarkets, including a wide range of electronic products and a good selection of casual and basic wear. Products are more likely to be available in family-sized packages so that families can enjoy greater savings. Customers will also enjoy new services like interest-free instalment payment and free delivery of electronic products.
When FairPrice Xtra AMK Hub opened its doors for business on 28 December 2006, it attracted more than 40,000 shoppers on the first day. FairPrice Chairman Mr Ng Ser Miang revealed in his speech at the grand opening, “During the recent Lunar New Year festive period, we saw record number of customers at FairPrice Xtra. It was truly encouraging and worth every effort in rushing to open the store in time for the festive season. The store has been open for two months now, and we are very pleased with the overwhelming support from the residents here, and the results have far exceeded all our expectations.”
FairPrice Xtra AMK Hub has also beefed up on family and wheelchair-friendly facilities in the store which are extremely popular with its customers. The hypermarket offers rebates, Linkpoints, FairPrice’s signature Every Day Low Price items, FairPrice housebrand products and discounts for the elderly on Tuesdays, just as what other FairPrice stores offer.
The hypermarket’s grand opening was graced by Mr Lim Swee Say, Minister, Prime Minister’s Office, and Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress as the Guest of Honor. Besides a galore of promotional activities and giveaways, FairPrice also kicked off the FairPrice Big Heart Challenge, which aims to raise at least $300,000 for five charities under the Community Chest, at this event.
