SINGAPORE, 23 August 2014 – Cheers, the convenience store arm of NTUC FairPrice’s (FairPrice), together with the support of ExxonMobil Asia Pacific Pte Ltd and Hock Cheong Group, has partnered with Children-At-Risk Empowerment Association (CARE Singapore) for a charity car wash event between 10am to 1pm today at the Esso service station along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8.

Drivers were invited to donate $10 or more with all donations collected onsite going to CARE Singapore. The donations will support CARE Singapore’s work of providing life-skills training, guidance and support to help vulnerable youths discover themselves and achieve personal success. Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO, NTUC FairPrice, along with members of the senior management team from FairPrice and Cheers and volunteers from CARE Singapore were present to do their part for charity by washing the cars during this event.

Mr Seah Kian Peng, CEO, NTUC FairPrice said, “In the Prime Minister’s recent National Day message, he encouraged the community to strengthen our bonds with one another with the spirit of mutual support. We are privileged that today’s event serves as another platform for FairPrice to play a role in fostering community spirit. At FairPrice we have a structured volunteer programme and we have clocked about 2,300 hours in 2013, or the equivalent of 287 work days which makes up more than a year’s worth of work. Today, our staff volunteers are happy to work together with CARE Singapore. We appreciate and support the work that CARE Singapore does for the youths and we thank the community for their participation in this meaningful cause.”

FairPrice launched the FairPrice Volunteer Programme to encourage staff to contribute back to the community. It is driven by 13 Volunteer Leaders across various departments who have stepped forward and were endorsed by their supervisors as passionate about volunteering. The FairPrice Volunteer Programme is part of FairPrice’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) framework in caring for the community. Earlier this month, FairPrice volunteers also participated in the Founder’s Day where they accompanied beneficiaries on a shopping trip and shared tips on stretching their dollar as they shopped.

Ms Lan Teo, Founder of CARE Singapore said, “Thank you FairPrice and Cheers, for supporting our work of helping youths succeed. Your simple yet effective event, Charity Car Wash, help our youths to discover their giving selves, camaraderie and community, as they partner with caring adult volunteers to give back to society. While the event benefits student participants directly, making a difference in their lives, funds raised will go towards CARE’s operating budget, continuing to bless more youths served by our programmes.”
