Discover Singapore’s Scenic Routes and Local Gems while Doing Good Through FairPrice Walk For Rice+ @ South East

  • The annual initiative rallies the community to participate virtually by walking or running at scenic locations across Singapore from 22 October to 31 December 2020.
  • FairPrice extends sponsorship, targeting to donate up to 500,000 bowls of brown and white rice and 50,000 bowls of oatmeal to vulnerable families

Singapore, 22 October 2020 – South East Community Development Council (CDC) and NTUC FairPrice (FairPrice) launched the twelfth edition of its signature Walk for Rice+ @ South East virtually today. The initiative stands committed to do good with a target to raise 500,000 bowls of white and brown rice, in addition to 50,000 bowls of oatmeal, with an added twist to encourage the community to discover Singapore’s scenic routes and local gems.

For the first time since its inception, participants of Walk for Rice+ @ South East can engage in either walking or running activities at their own time, to raise rice and oatmeal for vulnerable families in the South East District. The extended initiative showcases interesting sights and unique charms of Singapore, such as the Jousting Painters mural along Everitt Road and Instagram-worthy shophouses along Koon Seng Road.

Mr Fahmi Aliman, Mayor of South East District, shared, “COVID-19 sees the community taking steps towards a new normal, and it is essential to remember that as long as the community stays united, we can all overcome this together. We must not forget that while we fight the pandemic, the low-income families remain vulnerable with their daily needs and necessities. Walk for Rice+ @ South East is designed for everyone in the community to simply walk, or run if you wish to, to benefit the vulnerable families in South East District. I will definitely be doing my weekly runs and keeping fit, while helping these families, and I hope you will join me too.”

Mr Seah Kian Peng, Group Chief Executive Officer, FairPrice Group, said, “This initiative galvanises the community to promote active living, while supporting the vulnerable families residing in the South East District. Covid-19 has affected the lives of many, and have particularly impacted the livelihoods of the less fortunate. FairPrice Group remains committed in supporting them especially during these challenging times. Through innovation like this virtual Walk For Rice+ event, we encourage everyone to play a part for the community, keep healthy and enjoy the sights and sounds of Singapore”

For every 300metres of eligible walking or running activities completed between 22 October to 31 December 2020, or each participating product sold between 19 November to 02 December 2020, FairPrice Foundation will donate one bowl of brown rice, one bowl of white rice and one bowl of oatmeal towards the campaign. FairPrice Foundation has pledged to donate 500,000 bowls of white rice and brown rice, as well as 50,000 bowls of oats this year. The pledged amount of oats this year is 25 per cent more than last year.

FairPrice Walk For Rice+ @ South East is conceptualised under the South East 5E Approach. 5E involves using an Easy and Enjoyable activity that Encourages widespread participation within the community which Earns sponsorships for the needy. In doing so, South East CDC also Enlarges the value of the giving and thus enabling the CDC to Enhance community ownership and spirit.
