Customers at NTUC FairPrice are going green by cutting down usage of plastic carrier bags. NTUC FairPrice has recorded a reduction of over 12 percent in the number of plastic bags used since it launched the daily Bring Your Own Bag Day in July last year. Under this initiative, customers gets an instant 10-cents rebate for a minimum purchase of S$10 when they bring their own bag to pack in their purchases instead of using plastic carrier bags. In April last year, the National Environmental Agency launched the “Bring Your Own Bag Day” (BYOBD where customers were encouraged to bring their own bags every first Wednesday of the month. NTUC FairPrice participated in the programme and took it one step further by encouraging customers to bring their own bag everytime they shop at FairPrice.

Another sign that FairPrice customers are going green is the increasing sale of FairPrice reusable grocery bags. Since April last year, FairPrice has sold more than 250,000 reusable bags.

NTUC FairPrice Managing Director (Singapore) Mr Seah Kian Peng said: “We implemented the BYOBD on a daily basis last year in appreciation of customers who bring their own bags. We are glad to see that many of our customers share our concern to protect the environment and we thank them for their strong and encouraging support. We believe we can all do our part in taking simple steps like using reusable bags so as to reduce usage of plastic and contribute towards environmental sustainability.”

Apart from this initiative, NTUC FairPrice also participates in environmental related activities with other organizations and encourages staff to recycle all paper, plastic and metal wastage at its offices and branches through dedicated recycling receptacles.
